EMC Testing

What Is EMC Testing? Why Your Product Has to Pass It

What electromagnetic compatibility testing is, which products are subject to it and what failing costs you.

What Does Electromagnetic Compatibility Mean?

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is a device's ability to work without disturbing the devices around it and without being affected by them. It is a two-way requirement: emissions and immunity.

Emission testing measures how much interference a device emits; immunity testing measures how well it withstands signals from outside.

Which Products Are Tested?

Almost every electrical and electronic product sold in Europe goes through EMC testing for the CE mark. Automotive, medical, aerospace and defense products are subject to stricter industry-specific standards.

For example, CISPR 25 is used for vehicle electronics, IEC 60601-1-2 for medical devices and MIL-STD-461 for military equipment.

The Cost of Failing

A product that fails goes back to design, which means repeat test fees and a delayed launch. That is why more and more manufacturers are setting up in-house pre-compliance chambers.

Pre-compliance testing lets you catch problems at the design stage and go to the certification lab only once.

Which Standards Apply?

EMC tests are done to different standards depending on the product type and market. CISPR 32 for multimedia products, IEC 60601-1-2 for medical devices and CISPR 25 for vehicle electronics are the best-known examples.

In Europe these standards are applied under the EMC Directive and RED. For test infrastructure, see our semi-anechoic chamber options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does EMC testing take?

From a few days to a week, depending on the product's complexity and number of tests.

Is EMC testing mandatory for every product?

For most electrical and electronic products, yes; simple passive products may be exempt.

What should a product that fails do?

The source is found with pre-testing, the design is corrected and relevant tests are repeated.
