Preparing a Building for a Shielded Room: A Checklist

A point-by-point list of what to check in advance in the area where a shielded room will be installed: floor, ceiling, power, ventilation and access.

Floor and Load Capacity

Although shielded rooms are built from modular panels, the total weight shouldn't be underestimated. In anechoic chambers especially, absorbers, the turntable and test equipment put serious load on the floor. During the survey, the floor's load capacity per square meter and its flatness are checked.

If the floor slopes, gaps can form at panel joints, which means leakage. If needed, a level-adjustable base system is installed under the room or the screed is corrected.

Ceiling Height and Access Route

The room's internal height, panel thickness and service space above the ceiling are calculated together. Ventilation ducts and cable trays usually need at least 40–50 cm of clearance above the room.

The route by which panels will be brought into the building also matters: door widths, lift capacity and stair turns should be measured in advance. Thanks to the modular design, panels can be made in sizes that pass through standard doors.

Power, Ventilation and Communications

Since every power line entering the room passes through filters, the total power demand must be known from the start. Filters are selected by current rating, and their leakage current must be compatible with the building's electrical installation.

Penetrations with honeycomb filters are planned for ventilation and fiber optic lines for communications. Where these lines connect to the building's existing infrastructure is decided during the survey.

Nearby Signal Sources

If there is a base station, transformer, lift motor or high-current cabling near the planned location, it is measured during the survey. The ambient signal level directly determines how much shielding the room must provide.

These measurements also show whether the dB value in the specification is realistic. During the free site survey we carry out all these checks and give you a written report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a shielded room be installed in a basement?

Yes. Basements are often where outside signals are weaker; however, humidity and ventilation must be planned carefully.

Can other building work continue during installation?

It can, but work that creates dust and vibration in the room area should pause briefly during assembly.

Can the room walls sit against the building walls?

For service and maintenance, leaving at least 50 cm of clearance around the room is usually recommended.
