Challenges in 5G MmWave (FR2) Measurements
Why antenna and device measurements get harder in 5G bands above 24 GHz, and what to watch for when choosing the chamber and absorbers.
RF shield boxes that let you test wireless devices isolated from outside signals on the production line and in the lab, and their limits.
An RF shield box is a desktop-sized metal box that isolates the device inside from outside signals once the lid is closed. Small wireless devices such as phones, modems, IoT modules or car keys are placed inside, and cables exit through filtered connectors.
This lets the device be tested without interference from surrounding Wi-Fi networks and base stations. At the same time, signals generated during the test don't spoil measurements at the next station.
The most common use is the production line. Tests lasting a few seconds confirm each device's wireless link works; the box prevents stations working side by side on the same line from affecting one another.
In R&D labs it is used for software testing, protocol testing and quick pre-checks. A pneumatic lid allows thousands of automated test cycles.
The inside of a shield box is small and reflective. It can't be used for antenna performance, radiation patterns or standards-compliant emission measurement. Absorber material inside reduces reflections but doesn't create a true anechoic environment.
Applications where people need to work inside, such as examining seized phones, belong in a cyber security room, not a box. The box is designed for short, automated tests.
The decision depends on what you want to measure. A box is enough to confirm a device works. Values such as antenna efficiency, TRP and TIS require an antenna measurement chamber.
Many companies use both: detailed measurements in a chamber during development and quick checks with a box in production. We can help you find the right balance for your needs.
Quality boxes usually provide 70–90 dB of isolation. The value depends on frequency and the condition of the lid gasket.
Yes. Filtered interface panels for USB, Ethernet, RF and power connections are configured to your needs.
It can be used for short-term holding, but long examinations and work on the device require a shielded room.
